April Epner, an elementary school teacher, hits a rough patch. Her adoptive mother dies, she's having trouble conceiving a baby, and her husband leaves her. Will things get better or worse when she starts a relationship with one of her students divorced father and her biological, semi-famous mother returns?
The film was adapted from a novel by Elinor Lipman of the same name. Helen Hunt worked on turning the book into a film for ten years. She began raising funds and once she landed Matthew Broderick for a small role, more interest was generated for the film to be produced.
